Hi all, Im slowly working my way through all the F40 builds on here, plus a few others. Switches are something i have spoken to my father about as most other things can be found such as vents, lights but i have never found similar switches. So i think we are going to make an injection moulding tool to run off a number of blank switch fronts which could then be adapted onto other switch gear. Although i doubt we will find time for that untill later in the year! I managed to get a couple more hours into the LM front today, now have most of it layed up and fitted an inner arch lip on one side....(sorry for the wide angle pics, hope they make sense?) Also started to make some vents off my rear bumper to fit to the wing tops on the LM front, although still unsure if i will fit them, not all had them. Hopefully sould be done laying it up tomorrow and will be able to pop it out of the mold on thursday! Also starting to make plans to drag the body+rear plug out of storage and start working towards starting the molds, you have all re-ignited my enthusiasm for this long project! I'll sort through my older pics and put a few up shortly. Cheers

This project looks great. Well done. What was the original body panel set from again? Built off a 308 base? Did I read that correctly? It looks a lot closer to original than a lot of F40 kits out there for the Fiero. I have some incomplete plans for a chassis that fit the Fiero tub if you are interested. I got them as part of a frame I bought for one of my projects. I have since sold the frame but the plans set out the frame base, the front and rear suspension frames and that is about it. You could start with that and then build the cockpit frame off from those. The wheelbase is 98.5" and the track is stock Fiero. The frame was designed around C5 Corvette suspension. Anyway, if you are interested, here is the link to them. No cost, just sharing info. Keep at it as it is looking great. Hi Don,
Cheers for the link, all information is good information, although i dont plan for this to be donor based.
It will be a custom tube chassis, with the body being a single piece that gets bonded onto the single interior tub and inturn all bonded around the chassis, hopefully resulting in a stiff frame. Luckily i have my suspension uprights ready, well except for machining. Cast units that use Porsche/Brembo brake units, meaning rears have a drum inside the disk for the handbrake. I'll get a picture of the unmachined unit up in a bit.
Cheers

Plastic, GREAT work!!!!! FYI If you have a look at the link that Don provided you will see that the chassis is a custom tube chassis that is similar in size to the Fiero. That wouls be a good starting point for you chassis. http://www.madmechanics.com/general-kitcar-chat/ferrari-288-gto-project/

Incredible work.. You had a nice body to start with and it's even going to be accurate down to the passenger compartment tub from the looks of it.. To bad you have no plans to pull molds from the car.. I am not sure if the front clip could me modified to fit a Fiero kit or not, but that would be a hot item.. Keep up the good work

Yeah I own the chassis that was built from those plans! The onlything that is Fiero is the doors, door openings, and windshield frame! Does not use a Fiero tub. I've been modifying the chassis to better fit the F40 that I have been building.

Hi all, Thanks again for the comments, I have had a look through that thread since writing my comment, it's a lovely bit of kit. I will do some measurements to compare it to my shell. With the interior of my car being one piece that is fitted all around the inside of my bodyshell, which is 1 piece with screen surround, roof, cab windows, sides and sill's all attatched, i dont have much room for adjustment. Although that isnt to say that the shell alone couldn't be used over any chassis/fiero. I will be producing a full set of moulds so all panels will be available later this year. The wheel base of my shell is around 98.25" The RH arch lip is all in now and finished laying up the front skirt and vents today so hopefully will be finished laying it up tomorrow once the carbon is on. Sorry no pics today but i'll get some tomorrow. But heres a few other random pics of other part ready for this build... These are the uprights ill be using, not machined yet. My father has also used the fronts on his 4age Morris Minor van And a few of the body plug (buck) through the build process. (Some of these are pretty ol with alot of changes since, but thought you might like the see the progress?!)... I always appreciate comments and criticisms Cheers

I assume the f40 will be using 308 glass for the windshield since this kit was susposed to be based on a 308.. Would that be a correct assumption? I noticed right away the passenger compartment tub and a lot of pieces (if not all pieces) are molded from a real F40.. You would have to completely take a f40 apart to make the pieces you have in you kit.. This body, the components of the body, and the work you are doing is beyond awesome..

Hi, Yes you are correct, my shell uses original ferrari 308 windshield, and door glass/frames. The passenger tub is styled similar to the original F40, although the interior in an original is in many pieces and all needs lining up on the chassis, mine just drops on in one piece. The only parts that are close to original panels on my car are the rear bumper and dash, but both have been modded to fit. As for all the bodywork its all custom and definately would not fit into ferraris molds. Hope this helps? Cheers

Thanks for the kind words buddy, Start a build thread for your own, it definately helps you keep going with everyones comments. What will your LM be based on, a fiero? Laying up my LM front is proving a little fiddlier than first thought, but its getting there. Should be able to pop it out the mold on sunday and see how it looks.....watch this space...... Cheers

Cheers Hi chap, Its not an F40 LM, although it was an option at one stage.. its a British LM I'm just playing with the CAD drawings at the moment and we're only just coming to the end of renovating a house so still need to get the garage built before I can really start the fun bit. Its 2 years dreaming, a year planning and it will probably be 10 years building at this rate.. It will be a simular sort of build to yours.. moulded body, tubular chassis etc. I will start a thread all in good time but for now I'm enjoying reading about this build Looking forward to seeing the outcome of the front end! Keep us updated!

G'day all, Well she's out of the mold, pretty happy with it. Didnt really know what to expect as the mold is far from perfect so it has a few big flash lines but nothing a quick bit of sanding wont fix. I think i will fit the vents on top of the wings, the shark gill style not the NACA duct. Probably will have 5 per side, i may also look at making a front splitter. Comments always appreciated. Cheers
