    What engine?

    Hi there,
I am in South Africa and looking to buy a kit car. I have been looking around and found a good car to use. I am at odds about what engine/gearbox to use. The idea is to have a reliable motor with parts readily available and little maintenance.
The suppliers recommend the Toyota 4AGE 20 Valve 1600cc engine. It puts out 120kw. I was thinking of maybe the Civic B16 Vtec Engine or the new Civic Type R K20Z4 engine.

The car only weighs 650kg so nothing more than 2.0l is needed.

    Any suggestions?
    Will be much appreciated.

Well what car is it? Are u looking for a bolt in setup or all custom. I would reccomend the Mitsu 4g63 motor. It has a huge aftermarket and very reliable. Best bang for your buck!

If it's a mid engine kit car the Audi 4.2 V8 mated to the 01X or 01E gearbox would be great. If the car has the engine in front then the Nissan VH45 or VH41 V8 are nice engines, very inexpensive.

The car is called a Harper Type 5. Variation on the Lotus 7. http://www.harpersportscars.com/
I just want a bolt on standard engine. Will be using Gotech Management System and TNT Racing Exhaust.
Not sure how available this engine is in RSA. We only recently (last 5 years) started getting the Lancer. But I will have a look at the 1.6 motor.

    Thanks.

It is a Mid-engined car. Having a 4.2 V8 attached to a 650kg car is crazy. Looking for something between 1600 and 2000.

    Re: What engine?

It depends on the application. I do love muscle cars and V8 Engines. I have considered building a Cobra replica but there are some reasons why I cannot. I want a reliable fun car that I can use at track days and doesnt cost my whole salary to drive over the weekend. Fuel is very expensive in RSA man. Also having such a powerful car is looking for trouble. Think of having a 400hp motor strapped to a a 650kg fibreglass car.

I am not insane just want to have some fun. I am also looking at getting a Dodge charge for rebuild in a few years time. These muscle cars arent so easily available in RSA.
