Although I haven't had the chance to build a car yet, I thought I would share something with you that you might find handy or of some benefit. I recently took a $25 floor jack and turned it into a much more capable transmission/utility jack.

This jack now has a full 24" of lifting range (instead of the original 8") and is great for removing or installing transmissions, fuel tanks and other large bulky components. The castors were $4 each at Harbor Freight and rated at over 300lbs apiece.

Again, I just thought I'd share this for the benefit of someone else who might be thinking of doing something similar.
