    best anti theft?

i was thinking of securing my car since it's a nissan 240sx
convertible and right now, its without any security system
so i have a hard time leaving it outside with top down.
since i live near Los Angeles, theft is always an issue and i
wish peace of mind. discovery channel's "stolen every 23
    seconds" show didnt help

i've decided to follow the pro advice of getting multiple
    systems. so far i've gotten
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...412355958&rd=1
since it was cheap and good to have in general.

i want to add to that. i heard a gas valve is good. the ex-thief
on that show said some kind of club that locks on the steering
column, not wheel. where do i get one?

also, if you got good suggestions, keep em commin!
thanks, and i hope this helps others too

I put a hidden switch for the electric fuel pump on my car. Maybe an alarm will work as well. I like the steering column lock thing.

That's kind of what I have. I forgot about the switch one time and I could not get my car running to drive home from the airport after retuning from a business trip. Nothing like tearing your ride apart in the middle of a hot Florida night wearing a suit.

any alarm will add a lil peace of mind, but its what you do to the alarm that makes it count. Make sure its damn well hidden and all wires out of view. add a back up battery for the alarm. Power it off the battery so you can add a full car kill swich somewhere hidden (unless you want autostart) 2 way pagers are great if done right and its not a DEI version (cliffords best) AND the biggie "its not getting stolen" addon for us rebody drivers is... YANK that steering wheel! Grant makes a removable steering wheel adapter that you pull your wheel and put on a big red steal cover right over the colum that prevents it from being driven!! and hey nothing says cool like walking around with a ferrari/lambo wheel in your breifcase!!

BTW, clubs and that so called pedal lock are junk! clubs can be defeted and some cars you dont actually have to depress the brake to get in gear or drive! (I can drive my yukon gt with one on) to stop you just use the Ebrake.

    Re:best anti theft?

it depends on the car, some fit the brake lock

also, i cant do removable wheel since:
    1. nissan 240sx, not a lambo kit
    2. cruise buttons and wiring on wheel
    3. not convenient, not to mention $450 for the mount

as far as kill switch goes, the immobilizer takes care of
"Ignition, Ignition Coils, Fuel Pump and Starter".

i knew about rremovable wheels long ago

    DJ:

I'll follow your route although my car looked pretty bad at one time. I drove to the Tampa International Airport and parked next to the elevator (my usual spot 3rd floor by the train). I was running late as usual and just parked the car, grabbed my luggage and headed for the plane. I was in Europe for 10 days. When I returned I couldn't locate my keys and started to get depressed thinking of my error. But good fortune was on my side. As I arrived at my paring spot, there was my little spastic plastic 355, windows down, keys in the ignition and my half full coffee cup sitting on the console. No one decided to take her for a drive. Untouched!

I am a bit more careful now. I guess Tampa is an OK place to live.

    Re:best anti theft?

Ahh I forgot one more awesome tip!! Shave or dont install door handles on the outside.. I have door poppers wired up to my key chain remote. when I disarm the car I hold another button and pop comes the door. I know this is fool proof since I always have to help the mechanics and valet parking guys get in the car. (MAKE sure to install a keyed switch somewhere hidden incase of remote failure) Only major draw back to this method is I once returned to the car to find someone just felt like ripping my door skin off trying to get inside the car (put metal plate over the mechinisim and rods if you want to be safe) but a lil fiberglass and she was as good as new.

Funny wheels Its most likely your car was fine due to leaving the windows down. most people would see that as a sign the owner is returning soon, or its an invite to steal and get your butt busted. Its a trick the old owner of mine used to do. I have to nice of a stereo and interior to pull that anymore.

As a matter of fact, I had no interior at the time.

I will bet they were afraid, very afraid.
