Which Kitcar builders want to help some designer students?! ;D

    Hey peeps,

We are designer students from Holland, Rotterdam, and this projectperiod we have to design a kit-car. But before we can design one, (and in the near future really built one) , we have to research the marketing area of the kit-car. We are kinda curious about you! The people who bought and really built a kit-car. We have to make a marketing analysis about the current kit-car market. Ofcourse we can search some info on the net, but that’s not really interactive. We’d really like to communicate and get some feedback from from you guys, cause that will give us a better reflection of how the buyers think, the positive things they experience, and the negative things during building/using. This would be very usefull, because all the info can be used while designing a kitcar for us.

If you'd all be so kind to answer as many questions as possible, the more feedback we get, the better the designing wel get!

    Thank you in advance =D

Interesting choice of questions, the european market is far different than the North American market. In Europe the market is very mature and there are tons of excellent kits and a vast variety of different mostly European inspired cars. North America is dominated by the Hot Rod market so Vickys, 32/34 Fords, Dueces and so on then there is the Cobra crowd, also very big and then the much much smaller Exotic group the Ferraris and Lamborghinis. The exotic group is plagued with criminals who rip off the customers and a handful of ethical companies most of which won't last very long as the number of customers is quite low. I had heard that the Diablo market in NA was less than 200 cars a year. The Seven kits popular in Europe come as a virtually bolt together kit, the NA exotics however are at the other end of the spectrum requiring vast amounts of fabrication for the builder. The Diablo Roadsters are the most complicated to build and the most expensive. My car will finalize at around $66,500 USD from start to finish and will have run over 4 years. If I had gotten a part-time job at $15/hr instead of working on the car, I would have saved enough to buy a real (used) Diablo by the time I was finished.

    Personal data:

    -Age*************** 26
-Family status******** No Wife, No Life, No Kids
-Interests/Hobbies Kit Cars, Special FX makeup, sculpting.
    -Work/Education Self Employed

-What kind of model do you own? Countach and I'm Designing a Wraith Kit as we speak.

-What’s the donorcar for this model? Fiero for both.

-With what purpose did you purchase this model (just for fun, or as a daily driver, etc)? Countach for fun. Wraith as a fun, cool, daily driver that NO ONE sees on the road.

-What do you think is important in a kitcar?

    ***-Building it yourself
    ***-Lugageroom
    ***-Comfort
    ***-Basic / High-Tech
    ***-The looks / Image
    ***-Cabrio / open roof
    ***-Speed / horsepower
***-Other, Ease of build, quality of fiberglass work, and especially ease of finding replacement parts.

(put a * in front of your choice(s))

-Do you have the facilities and space to build a kitcar? When my business shop is complete, yes... until then, I have 3 carports I work under.

-Would you have liked to have supervision or inspection while building the kitcar? No. I'm my own worst supervisor.

-What where the total costs for purchasing and building the kitcar? Countach... estimated $12,000 to completion, but it's not completed yet. Wraith... I'm fabricating it myself so it will be a heck of a lot cheaper.

-How much time did it cost to build the kitcar? I've had the Countach for 3 years and it's not done. I only worked on it in my spare time and never in bad weather. Only recently have I had the time to concentrate on it more and stopped caring about the weather conditions.

-Is it expensive to maintain a kitcar, compared to a “normal” car. Depends on the donor car and the "specialty parts" that the kit demands. Most Fiero based kits are pretty practicle.

I'm not sure how you are planning on making the Kit Car or if you've done it before, but if you have any questions or want suggestions, feel free to email.

as far as i know, this would be illegal in US/Canada since it has no bumpers, but a kit car might get around that ???
