Need some help finding the right person.....

    Hello all,

My name is Brian Colvin. I am a freelance designer that has had work considered for production by Lamborghini, Maserati, and other companies Have letter from some big names in the industry. I am working out of Chicago, and starting the baby steps to my own business. My dream has always been to start my own car company, and after much investigating and thinking, my best bet is to start with a company producing rolling chassis, and go from there.

Well, being that I am a designer, I don't want to make copies. I would rather do that part myself. You may be wondering what kind of vehicles I am going to try to sell. Well, I became a car nut after seeing a Countach. But since then I have fallen in love with many other models such as Chevelles, Bugattis, Ferraris, old mustangs and motorcycles. Mainly I love hotrods, muscle cars, beautiful prewars, exotics, and modern sports cars, and choppers (long and low, not high and funny lookin). Being that the recent demand for Muscle cars has hit full effect (A Camaro Convert went for 120k on Barret's!!!!!, 120K!!!!!) I have decided to design a Modern interpretation of the 1970 Chevelle, and the 1987 Buick GNX. I have gained support from a Reputable Chassis Builder, Mike from http://chassisworksinc.com/home.html and he has shown great interest in building the Chassis' for our cars. Also, at the same time I want to build a custom Chopper, with a single tube frame, and hubless wheels. After the SS454 and the GNX 3800 are designed and in production, I will begin work on a 1934 Ford inspired ultra modern coupe. The Chopper will be in production before the cars.

The SS 454 and GNX 3800 are going to be full tube frame, all independent suspension, front engine rear transmission, with air bag suspension and 13 inch front/12 inch rear brakes. The Cars will so far be only sold as Complete cars minus the engine, transmission and wheels (with full interior, full glass). We are looking at a primary price of around 20k for the roller. The 34 Ford or "Thirty Four" will be a little more, due to the fully retractable all glass hardtop. The chopper "Essex" will only be sold as a complete bike for 35k. I will also be making profit by offering Sandcast aluminum valve covers and intake manifolds, and Twin Turbo Kits for 2005 Mustang GTs and V6s. I am working on a set of drawings to build a Twin Turbo V6 for a FOrd Dealer that might be interested in making a special edition SVO twin turbo V6 model for his dealership to sell.

Hmmmm, I see that I need to host my pics somewhere first before I put them up here. Well I'll work on that. Anyway, what I am currently looking for is someone who has been in the business and would be interested in financing part of my business. If I can locate a certain amount, I am sure I can secure a government loan, and I have some city officials that are helping me with that process.

Well, I hope someone on here can point me in the right direction, or point the right person to me. I am an honest guy, and not a salesman at all ( not a good BSer), and that is why I have not found an investor yet. I am hoping to find someone who has been in the business. I am only 27, and while I might have an extensive automotive and business backround on my Resume, good help is always appreciated.
So, either I would want someone who has been in the industry, or a silent investor. I will consider partial ownership for incentive.

I will try to get some pics hosted somewhere soon, so I can put them up here. Til then, - Brian

    oh yeah, thanks-!

And when I do get going, I wil run ads on this site as well as others.

Without wanting to appear as a naysayer, you need a little more focus, as the saying goes "eat the elephant, one bite at a time". Agressive product plans are all well and good, but more product means more resource, hence more money. I would recommend you pick one, do that thing exceptionally well, build a reputation for your business faise more capital and then expand your portfolio. Remember even Richard Branson (Virgin empire) started with the school paper, before he became the multi-billionaire he is now.
I wish you the best of luck in you endeavours, but as you know working in and around the auto industry, it takes a hell of a lot more than a what it looks like to make a successful car, especially if its "turnkey".

Don't worry, about 90% of all replies I get are from Naysayers.

The GNX and the Chevelle will share the entire chassis, suspension, etc. The only difference being the exterior and interior panels. Also, the GNX will come with 3.8L engine mounts instead of LS-1 mounts. As I said, after the Chevelle and GNX are up and running, I will begin the thirty four. The chopper is going to have all the parts save for the Frame, the wheels brakes and the Hubless system, all supplied from one outside company. The brakes and wheels will be sourced from another company, the hubless system made by a local machine shop, and the frame will be made in house. Assembly will be done in house, paint will be farmed out for now. Also, to make things easier, I have lined up a company which will produce all of the exterior Panels, all of the interior panels, and another company that will make the interior and trim.

I understand the thought behind starting with one product. But that logic is also putting all of your eggs in one basket. With my chopper designs, I will sell them easily. I have presented my designs to a few local builders and they have been shocked.

As for my focus, well.... I don't know what you mean. This is my focus. I understand focusing on one thing at a time, which is why the Chopper is almost completely designed down to the wiring, and would be in production within 4 months. While the Cars would take a while longer, and since they share 90% of their parts, they would be released almost simutaneously. And offering parts at the same time, well that is good business. Selling something that cost 30 dollars to make, for 100-200 dollars, that is in demand, well that is just good business, and will act as supplimental income to the rest of the business. These items will take minimal investment, and minimal production effort. And the TT kit, well that is something that will have a cost of roughly 35% of the end price. If I can sell a few a month, that will also make good money, and build my companys' reputation.

Also, I don't want to sound like an A-hole, but my request is up here to try to find that right person who would like to invest in my company, not for business advice, I have plenty of assistance in that area, including the Local SBA, the local Economic Development officers, and some friends like the former North American President and CEO of Maytag, among others. I am not willling to ask him to finance my company because we are good friends.

    Thanks- Cd

Like i said i wish you every success , and business advice is what i charge for (25 years as a design and manufacturing consultant in the auto industry) . So I have lived with more than my fair share of good idea's that ran out of steam (read money) at the 11th hour.

no offense, but i get advice from everywhere and money from no-where. From my position, it is hard to tell who is 14 years old and knows everything, and who is an experienced business development specialist (ie you or I), from the initial posts I get.

Advice is sometimes free and worthy just the same.
Money for a kitcar business is a LOT harder to find.
Success stories (moneywise) are not plentyfull in this business.

So I'll stick to the advice side of the matter.

I don't understand the Chevelle and Buick side of it !!! Never met anybody interested in building one or asking questions as to the existence of this type of kits.

Pony cars maybe (camaro, barracuda, mustang and even AMX)
A reproduction of a 1968 camaro built on a custom chassis using modern corvette suspension, engine and transmisson might have some appeal I suppose... But a buick ????

    Just my HO !

    Keep smiling

look at the prices of 1987 Buick Regals in your area. In good shape the non turbo ones with 30k granny miles will at most go for 4k (private sale) where a beat up GN will fetch 9k, a low mile GNX will fetch 20k.

Now, I do not plan to make reproductions. I plan to make redesigned versions. My Chevelle would be like if a hotrodder took a chevelle and did as much mods as the Chezoom, or the Cadzilla. THe Buick looks like it is a newer model of the GN.

The thing is, now there are repop Camaro Bodies. Next are repop Mustangs, and Cudas, and 67 Novas. Real Muscle cars are skyrocketing in price (bad thing) but there are not a lot out there. And this is like having a new Buick Muscle car, or a new Chevelle, two muscle cars that were big in their day, but not available today.

DOn't expect too many people to understand, unless you see my designs, and read my business plan, you won't. But I know I won't get in trouble for making a design similar to a Chevelle, but better, and a design similar to a GN, but better. You know?

Plus, if I made kits of cars that you can get (similar models of) for a few grand and build how you want, why would you spend thousands more on a kit? For example, a 70 malibu with a 307 and automatic with a good body but crappy interior and paint, is probably a 3000 car. That is also why these kits will sell. In order to get a real chevelle to look like my design, you would need to invest probably 75k into the body at a hotrod shop, and they probably wouldn't use any of the original sheetmetal anyway.

    CD,

I like your ideas, I also wish I had the money to help you out. I would quit my job in a second if I could make a living customizing/restoring cars. I'm full of ideas but no time or money to make them real and I'm in no position to take any finacial. Good luck with your dream, I hope it works out for you.
