    3.4 DOHC

Has anyone put a 3.4 DOHC engine in their car?

    1. How easy is it?

    2. Was it worth the time and $$$? ???

    1) Yes

    2) On a scale from 1 - 10, 10 being the hardest... 7 maybe 8

    3) Most definately worth the money

    Re: 3.4 DOHC

I can get a 3.4 DOHC at a good price.

I heard the engine will bolt up to the original auto trans and engine mounts. Is this true?

Did the engine width cause problems?

I heard you have to drop the cradle to change the plugs. Is this True?

Where were the worst problems areas?

    Thank you

    Fino:

Yes, they can be purchased for a reasonable price. If memory serves, there were two in the Mall section either here or on Pennok's forum.

Bolting it in is virtually identical to the stock 2.8 There are some mode to allow for fitment but only movements like slotting a motor mount bracket for adjustments and such.

The engine is a tight fit but a FIT. There are no real issues with engine width.

NO, dropping the cradle to pull and replace plugs is NOT true. That's the 4.9 guys talking because they are jealous

Actually, they are very easy to get out provided you have half a brain and can put two universals together on a ratchet.

The worst issues for me was just making sure everything was hooked up right and snug. There are alot of cables and hoses and stuff. Just take your time and make some notes and you'll be fine. Also, when I power washed the motor, I killed both the Throttle Position Sonsor and the Idle Air Controller!!! Apparently, they are very sensitive to water damage

Beyond that, this motor will provide you with the greatest of rewards!!!

I absolutely LOVE mine. The Sound. The 7500 Revs. The Sound. The Speed. The Sound. The Torque. The Sound.

    Did I mention the sound?

Do you have an automatic trans or stick? I hear the torque is low for the automatic.

I might buy the engine and install it when I get done with the Fino body.

I think the DOHC looks great.

    Re: 3.4 DOHC

I have a 5-speed. It's not the Getrag 282 that comes in the 88 Fiero, it's the factory mated Getrag 284 that came in the Grand Prix. VERY fast and stout. Gobs of torque.

When I first installed and drove the Fiero around, I couldn't figure out where all the "go fast" went... I'd let out the clutch and get it going VERY slowly. Totally bogging. Then the rpms would come up and it would rev out to 110 MPH without changing a gear!!!

THEN I figured out that I was starting it in THIRD GEAR the whole time!!!

    Now THAT is Torque!

Okay, so starting it out in first will light the tires up straight through 3rd gear but that's another story

    Hey Guys,

Again I am a REAL Newbie at this, So please bear with me if my questions seem :P Stupid.

What does the 3.4 DOHC come out of? It sounds like something I would be interested in checking out for my Lambo Kit. Also Great Info on the 5 speed Tranny. I was woundering if the Grand Am or Grand Prix could be swapped out.

From 1991 - 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix, Lumina Z34s and I don't recall the third, but these two are the most common.
