    SL500 kits...

I know there are many topics about this but I have...hopefully a simple question.

my brother is looking into buying a 1989-2001 sl500 for the best price he can find and I showed him the kits to convert from those years to 2002+ models and he was very interested. Now I have 2 questions:

    1) are there any kits in the United States for the updated conversion?
    2) out of pure curiosity.....if a 1989-2001 style sl500 can be converted from a lebaron...and a older sl500 can be converted to a new one....wouldnt it make sense that a la baron could be converted to a 2001+ sl500?

    thanks for your help.

i have only seen these conversions on german, czech, and italian sites, nothing on this side of the atlantic. the fact ive only seen 3 or 4 of the new models is probably the reason why many things havent happened with this yet, it's simply a rare kit right now and it seems only people with SL money could afford the body.

thats in no way reasonable. for $5k it would seem like a fair deal, but at 4x that, its hardly worth the result (an SL that you can buy for less than that $$ in salvage form).

i'd say go to a salvage car auction and get a flood car from florida for cheap. pull out the engine and tranny, part it out, redo the interior and put in a cheap drivetrain v6 or v8. for about the same $ as that lebaron based SL, you'll have a real SL thats cheap to maintain.

yeah it would be a nice alternative to a (basically) scratch built car such as the gallardo I have been working on. I'm thinking about purchasing a lebaron from http://baltimore.craigslist.org/car/157948141.html and taking off the panels. then doing the same process as the nsx-f50 conversion. or saving up for a little longer and buying an authentic sl500 from ~1992. It makes more sense to me to use a lebaron for insurance and repairing options.

a guy i know got a 96 SL for under $10k, its not that expensive if you look around. for me, the only reason i would want one is the luxury and power, and a replica wont give you either, just the look. over here an SL doesnt really mean anything, its like owning a beemer, nothing special really, so i cant see a replica being worth making in this part of the country. it would sell for under $5k

thats true but a labaron with say a 3800 v6 in it is more reliable and cheap to maintain than a $120,000 mercedes. heck, mercedes dont even have dip sticks! lol
