I have the 3.4 superchared! thats right 3.4 easy swap cost is min. super charger is from 4.3 vortex the engine job was a pice of cake only hard part is to drill bolt holes for stater, if you drain engine oil and spin engine upside down it isn't that hard. hole project took two weeks cause I cleaned everything and took my time.
3.8 job was a lot harder members in are club have done them with great results cost is more.

3.4... would that be the pushrod 3.4 or the DOHC 3.4?

    Re: 3800SC II or 3.4??

First off, the 3.4 Pushrod is a MUCH different motor than the DOHC (also called the Twind Dual Cam or TDC). For starters, teh base Horse Power on the Pushrod is only around 160 while the base HP for the 3.4L DOHC starts at 215.

Earlier 3.4L TDC motors came from the factory originally at 275 HP!!!

I don't know of ANYONE that has succesfully added a Super Charger to a 3.4 DOHC motor although there are some 450 + HP Turbo Charged DOHC motors around

I have heard of people Super Charging the 3.4 Pushrod, but that only brings the HP to barely within specs of the BONE STOCK DOHC.

So, a Super Charged Pushrod versus a Super Charged 3800, go with the 3800SC. No contest.

On the other hand, if you are talking even a Nomrally Aspirated 3.4L TDC or DOHC motor... I'd take the 3.4L DOHC over the 3800SC in a heartbeat!!!

Keep in mind, they are nearly identical in terms of performance but the 3.4 DOHC is NOT using forced air!!! If you did want to compare them straight across, then charge the 3.4L DOHC and leave the 3800SC in the dust.

I know for a FACT that normally aspirated, the 3.4L DOHC can crank out 300+ HP. Some of the local guys have seen and even driven my 3.4L TDC motor and know what I'm talking about

    Now for the "other hand"...

The 3.4L DOHC motor is hard to come by, more expensive and harder to get full support for. While the 3800SC is a main stream motor and has tons of part support and is hanging from every tree.

In truth, there is NO motor like the 3,4L DOHC in the Fiero. The sound alone is the coolest thing ever and then there's the power, the torque and the perma-grin stuck to your face after driving it.

Ultimately, it's up to you and your budget, but I'd try and get together with someone that has done the rare 3.4L DOHC conversion and really see what you'd be missing.

    Good Luck!

DKOV had a 1991 Grand Prix GTP that was totaled and used the engine from that. See more details from his website:

    And Tranny

Net cost to me, after all was said and done, was $500 for both the motor and tranny including the axles, ECU, harness and other cool tidbits that were not needed.

I bought the car back from salvage for $1000 and removed everything I needed and wanted. Then I sold the remains to a local yard for $500.

    Lucky me, huh?
