A Waterloo woman was killed instantly yesterday when an SUV crossed the median of the Conestoga Parkway and struck her car head-on.

The woman's female passenger and the driver of the SUV suffered serious injuries in the crash, which happened at noon at Courtland Avenue in Kitchener.

Pamela Miller, 38, of Waterloo was driving west in a Chrysler Sebring when she was struck by the eastbound SUV.

Miller's friend, Sandra Spehar, 42, of Shelburne was in the passenger seat. She suffered head and internal injuries and was transported by air ambulance to Hamilton General Hospital.

She was listed in serious but stable condition last night.

Meanwhile, a day earlier, a Kitchener man died after losing control on Highway 401.

In yesterday's crash, the convertible's roof was down when the accident occurred.

The OPP did not release the name of the lone occupant of the SUV, a 34-year-old Kitchener man.

He was transported to Grand River Hospital with internal injuries as well as injuries to his head and back. He was later transported to Hamilton General, where he, too, was in serious but stable condition.

The vehicle he was driving resembled a Hummer but was a "kit car," built by the owner from a kit of parts, the OPP said.

Acting Sgt. Mike Ball of the OPP said the SUV hit the low curb of the median and rolled before colliding with the convertible.

Both vehicles caught fire but passersby managed to put out the flames with fire extinguishers before firefighters arrived.

Passersby also pulled the unconscious driver from the burning SUV, which came to rest on its roof.

"They undid his seatbelt and dragged him out," said Capt. Greg Willett of the Kitchener Fire Department. The OPP are investigating why the man lost control.

"At this time we don't know why he went into the westbound lanes," Ball said.

The convertible came to a stop across the westbound lanes of the highway, its front end obliterated by the collision.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extricate the two occupants of the convertible.

The westbound lanes were closed for three hours as the OPP investigated and cleared the scene.

Lets hope they don't directly link this to the kit cars construction and thus try to impose more restrictions...
