i'll have to have my car wholesaler comb the auctions for an older range rover now! how reliable are the higher mileage range rovers? many of them are 100k miles on the odometer. I wouldn't want to update one that will have many mechanical problems.

You can get them pretty cheap these days...Also, i would do an engine swap anyway, so mechanically you would be covered with a reliable simple engine like the LS1 for example. Compact, mid-weight, powerful, takes FI easily, can generate 500+hp on stock internals.

Make a Range Rover Sport re-body that can take on the real current 2007 Range Rover sport!

How tough are the swaps? Can any mechanic do it or do I need a specialist?

Get The 4.6 HSE Models as their prices have all dipped to around the $5000 range even for late 90s models/ a little more for early 2000s

Ive read about many, and discussed quite a few with friends that have done it.. never done it myself....but from what i hear it can vary dramatically. As you would imagine, space is a huge limiter, but in this case you are covered with plenty of engine bay room. Another thing is electronics, however, if you get the engine and trans and computer as a package and replace all the older run-down problematic rover components, it should be pretty straight forward. I would ask around to local mechanics, but i would stick to specialty tuning shops, import tuning shops.

I would also consider doing the re-body first. Once you have the re-body completed you can try to get someone else to pay for part of the engine swap...people will take interest when they see what you have created..

I contacted ls1-power.com and they quit doing the LS1 swap as they couldn't make it work financially (cost of components/labor) with a high quality swap. They'd help w/ advice for do it your-selfers though.

youve got 2 different company photos, theres xotic from ireland that do the sport version,
and you have rangeover for the vouge kit.
both look easy enough to do, minimal cuttin mainly arond the rear lights to get the bigger, newer ones in.
i have seen both company kits at shows and the rangeover one looks a better fit and finish than the irish one, that looked a bit rushed.
as for the range rover (p38), get the best you can afford, theres loads to go wrong with these cars from electrical to mechanical.
i have seen high milers in the uk with sketchy service history go for 1200
