What I did on my vacation this year

I took a short one week vacation this year and spent the week in MA at my friend Budís old garage. The garage was started by his father about 87 years ago. If you are into old stuff like me. You would think itís a cool place to hang out.

The goal we had was to start and run a 1928 caddy that was in Budís family for many years. The car was originally his motherís car and at one point was converted by his father into a wrecker for the old garage. The wrecker machinery was then removed and a replacement body was put back on years later. The car spent many years laying out in the woods behind the garage. To help preserve it. It was put under cover 20 or so years ago. Some of the parts like the headlights and wheels were stored in his basement so the kids didnít break them through the years. Since the car hasnít run in 40 years or so. We thought we would stretch itís legs and take it for a ride.
The owner of the garage we call Bud started working on the car some time ago by putting Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders and removing the carb for an overhaul.

After tinkering around for a few days we were able to start her up. (lots and lots of smoke) The next goal was to take it for a ride.

We inflated the old tires and put them on the massive drums. We had a little setback since we needed to locate a special tool that installed the wheels to the drums. The next day we found the special wrench and put the wheels on. The radiator had a massive leak but was good enough to take it for a short ride.

The next thing we found was that after we got her started it would not go into gear because the clutch was stuck onto the flywheel. So, we put her into gear when the motor wasnít running and engaged the starter. The old car learched out of her resting spot and jumped of the garage. Fortunately, the clutch let go shortly after coming out of the garage and it started working properly.

That is really great stuff. Glad you posted pictures.
It brought back a memory of when I had an old car with a stuck clutch. I sat the rear up on stands with the tires off the ground and started the car in gear. Then I pushed in the clutch pedal and tapped the brakes. The clutch broke free immediately.

Thanks Sean, I really enjoyed that story. You might even give it a fresh paint job after next summer. I wish they built them like that today!
