    Fiberglass panels Illegal in Australia?????????????

    Any Aussies out there?

I have read that fiberglass panels are only permissable in pre 1971 vehicles?

How do you get around this if you want to do a kit car?

I think your info may be wrong.

I am building a lotus 7 replica in australia and 50% of those panels are fibreglass.
Cobra's, GT40's etc all have fibreglass bodies are registered
You see plenty of "Modified" cars with fibreglass body kits on them.
All the above are registered cars and have been done widely. I know that 1 guy in Queensland was asked to do a crash test on a piece of fibreglass... no one really knows why but he did it to a small panel and everyone was happy. The crazy Australian road rules strike again!

Can you link to were you read this?

Thats what i understand. You can have body kits and such but not bonnets (to do with structural safety)...I just painted my CF bonnet same as the car on my old Skyline

a metal hood/bonnet is engineered to bent/fold up in the center and stay latched at the front and rear during a crash.a fiberglass hood/bonnet would shatter a possibly come through the windshield.

No, if you download body mods [not bonnets] it says that fiberglass panels are illegal on cars from 1971 and older

I think they mean guards (as in front guard replacement...) mainly. But there is registered kit cars on the road in Australia with full fiberglass shells and are still legal....
