    308 replica build UK

    Hi,

This is my first post on MM so go easy on me har har.

I am in the UK and i am interested in building a 308 replica. I dont want to go down the route of a fiero with fibreglass panels bonded to it, but more so building my own tube space frame chassis and creating a pretty much exact copy of of the GTS shell in fibreglass. I want to go this route because i want to use a 3.9 or 4.2 rover v8 and dont think it will fit in the space available in the fiero (plus there arent many fieros around here in the UK).

A number of questions arise from me here- the first of which is, is there any chassis plans for the 308 that someone has created? The next question is how would i build a mould for the fibreglass body if i have no dimensions to work from (could i 3d scan a scale model and get the plug made by someone in foam?) and the last question what gearbox/transmission shall i use for the mid mounted rover v8 (may i add that i would like a manual gear change).

Ive got quite a good technical knowledge of cars and im currently restoring a 1974 MGB roadster, but i feel that this 308 project will provide me with more of a challenge!

    Thanks
    Chris

Hi Chris You might get some info from this thread Ferrari 308 GTB at Stoneleigh 2011 on this forum. I saw the 2 PMD cars at Stoneleigh this year, they have to be the best 308 replicas I've seen. They seem to be the way you want to go.

Oh wow that does look spot on, I guess that taking moulds from the original car is the best way to get a 100% replica but that isnt possible for me
Looking at that thread too shows the automilan replicas of which i am quite interested in knowing how good a replica they are, I know that they dont come up too often but if one did, from what ive seen, i would definitely look at buying it and modifying it to fit a v8 (dont want to mess about with an escort engine when you can have a lovely sounding and powerful v8!)

Seems to me you'd be ahead if you started with a real 308. I'm currently doing a custom 308/Mera on a Fiero.

BTW, there's plenty of room in the Fiero for most engine swaps.

    Hi
Thanks for your replies. That 308 replica looks amazing and pretty much spot on!

Bob, it's such a rarity that real 308 project cars come up in the uk and prices for 308s seem to be in the 50k-70k price range (85k-120k usd) which is way out of my project budget. Plus servicing and insurance costs for Ferraris are quite a lot here especially as im in my 20s. I have looked at trying to get plans for a tube space frame fiero which i could alter to the correct wheel base for the ferrari and allow extra room for the v8, then work from there but couldnt find anything apart from unfinished documents. I would prefer to build myself as it gives a lot more sense of achievement!

    Cheers

    Chris
