    Making molds and pulling parts?

I have been trying a few different ways of trying to remove parts from molds with very little luck. I was just wondering what is the best releasing agent you have found and where did you get it? Most of the whitish areas are where I had some minor separating of the fiberglass layers due to sticking to the mold.

Meguiars has a carnuba mold release wax (#8) that works great, 2-3 coats and parts pull away beautifully. I get my supplies from tap plastics, available online.

Re: Making molds and pulling parts?

I use bee's wax to prepare my molds. 2-3 coats of the bee's wax buffed out between each application and then I use PVA mold release brushed on with a cloth. I got it from the fiberglass shop I get my supplies from. I haven't had any mold separation problems in all the molding I have done to date.

Go to a fiberglass suppliers place, not the automotive stores with some resin and cloth on a self but a real fiberglass supplier store and ask them for the mold preparation wax. They will give you the correct wax to make sure you don't have any more problems.

It is definitely worth the effort to track the proper wax down and applying.

When making molds or parts make sure you're not using a wax base resin. The last layer can be, most of the resin you get in auto parts stores have wax. The wax has to be sanded before the next layer goes on or you wont get a good bond. It's ok to use the wax on the final layup to avoid the tackiness.
