    Got 180 degree headers installed

Had to mod the frame considerably!

Now to clean up my welds and paint the frame a bit - can't wait to hear it yowl

It does look weird! I built up several tube arrangements out of wood; this one won. Strength and triangulation are fine - I do play a mechanical engineer at work.

But yeah, I had to keep telling myself that "form follows function", and that several short straight tubes are the best.

    Hi McDesign,

Not to question your design, because they are beautiful, but are you sure those are 180 degree headers? Are you going to do cross over's after before the collectors? My understanding of 180's is the firing order of the engine is taken into consideration, the exhaust pulses are then timed by the headers to give that high pitch sound we are all after. The above photo shows what I thought 180 headers were. I have never built a set, but have seen them in person and heard them on dirt track cars. I could still be wrong.....wouldn't be the first time either! ;D

Sure - but it's clearer with the collectors on. You can see that the top four primaries (two from each bank) are gathered into the top collector, and the same with the bottom. What's cool is that if I build a pair of side-by-side flat (vertical 4-into-1) collectors, the headers would revert to conventional exhaust timing, and back to the V-8 boominess.

But - you'll note the collector diameter is 3-1/2" - this is wrong for my appplication. With true alternating firing pulses the collector diameter only needs to be slightly larger than the primary pipe diameter. Here, these are stock car headers so part-throttle response isn't as important. In this case, I'll actually weld in reducer cones (to 2-1/4" tube) to go the foot or so to the mufflers.

Also - the reason both collectors go to one side here is that on stock cars that only turn left, there is a low pressure area under the passsenger rocker panel - thus the best place to exhaust the engine because of the mild scavenging effect.

Thanks for the reply. "Now" I see the 180 in your design, thanks to your help! I saw two vertical collectors, or one huge collector...duh! Isn't it amazing how tunnel vision we can be?

Have you fired the engine yet?

Like the others, sound clips are expected.....soon!
