    FIERO Power Steering

Has anybody had any luck installing power steering in their Fiero? Has anybody even considered it? Doesn't seem like it would be hard to do.

There was a lot of talk about that here a long time ago. I think Sandy in Canada done it with a Dakota rack. Someone else with a Chevette rack? Also someone had an electric powered rack.
I don't know - bad memory. ??? A search here should help you.

I've heard that on the '88, there was an electric rack available, but they were very rare. It seems it wouldn't be to hard to do, as long as you could find a rack that would mate up to the Fiero steering column. The pump mounting is easy, and even if the steering arms coming out of the rack were the wrong length, you could modify them to fit. I would love to find one of those elctric units though.

Not quite interested in spending $700 for a $50 steering rack. That price ($700) doesn't even include the pump!

    Re: FIERO Power Steering

Power steering has been done. As mentioned, Sandy did a dakota rack in his kit. Rickady88GT has two writeups at Pennock's. One is for a camaro rack, the second is for a Corvette rack. There is also a writeup for using an electric assist unit. The old Zimmer's did have power steering, using a Mercur rack. Also, the Chevette rack can be used. None of these are drop in replacements. The best and hardest to find would be the 88 proto-type rack. They float around every so often. THe last one I saw went for over $1500.

    Re: FIERO Power Steering

I am using the chevette steering rack along with the MR2 electric hydralic pump, ecm and all the sensors. I haven't driven mine yet on the road but it seems to work well. The system actually will reduces power assist based upon vehicle speed. If you do a search on electric power steering pumps you will find many of the builders of electric vehicles use the MR2 pump and sensors.
