    audi 5000 transaxle

Am I looking for the fwd version only or will the 4wd version work as well?
Ive been doing some reading online and it seems there are many mixed opinions. Some say its good for 450-500hp some say its a weak paper weight and to forget about it and look into the porsche transaxles.

Looking to put down 300-450 max so hoping it will hold but anyone putting down 500+ through it??

You are looking for the FWD version, that much I know. As for how much torque it can handle, is more of a subjective question. Reading the forums will only get you peoples guesses. The only true measurement of torque comes from the manufacturer. Can a transmission designed to handle a 200 ft/lbs of torque handle 400 ft/lbs? I do not know. There are people out there that are doing this, but you are going to have to respect the transmission and shift it well. For me the question is would I want to spend $300-400 on a Audi unit that should work, or $7000 on a Porsche unit that will work. With that logic, my money would be spent on the Audi.

Its a matter of driving style. If you are going to be gentle to the trans then it would be just fine, but if you are going to put 335 and show off how big your lead foot is. GO the the Porsche trans

Think about what your saying, you wanna trans that will handle 500+ hp, but you only wanna pay $400 for it! That makes no sense at all! With 500 hp you will break the audi, over and over and over and over and...you get the idea. If your budget is tight, consider less power and the audi.

I've got a 5 spd renault transaxle that would work. Some have used it in GT-40 replicas so probably comparable to the audi. pm if interested.

If you go with the Audi you will need to reinforce the cast iron case first.
After you reinforce you can NOT get rubber by popping the clutch. You will break the spider gears next.
If you do clean launches, no burnout attempts and smooth shifts it can handle the power.
If your foot slips off the clutch once, it's broken.

hi Jim.. its seems like its been ages since you`ve posted!! How is your build going?? Thanks for the info, I was actually on youtube watching your shifter linkage video on it yesterday.

Also where abouts did you get your 016 from? checked kijiji around toronto and looks like most are auto or awd.. no manual fwds.. I`m not really in a rush but figured I`d start looking sooner rather then later.

    Cheers

Jim has also pioneered putting 944 Turbo spider gears into the Audi to take care of the gear problem.

They (016's) are very rare right now.
I checked out a 5 speed from a Boxster and it looks perfect for the build. It is slightly shorter and the correct orientation. 6 speed is also available.
I would do this next time in a heartbeat.
They seem to be around $1500.00 at most salvage yards.
