I would like your opinions on this car.

    http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/v...r=&cardist=118

Well the 88 fiero I was about to get was snagged from me just last night...sigh. But the above car doesn't look too bad to me. I decided that the diablo would be bitting off a little more than I can chew for now so I am looking for other kits that will be a little better for money and work.

The guy said the car has just rolled past 100k, its a 4 spd and from what he said it sounds like the car has been taken care of. I'd like any comments on this car and also suggestions for kits that would be minimal on time and work (this kit car stuff is apparently much more work than I first thought)

    Thanks guys!

From one picture it looks okay.

Check on shifting smoothness if you are going to keep the 4 spd in it. Check for frame rust around the rear engine frame but there usually isn't too much. Also check for working headlight motors if you plan to do a 355 using stock headlight assemblies.

Other than that, take a look at your interior seats and various plastic panels to make sure they are okay. You will probably end up chaningout the dash and recovering the seats anyway so don't worry too much about those.

    Dan,
I am selling a 355 spyder kit with an already stretched and stiffened Fiero. The Fiero is a 1987 GT with a 5-speed, p/w, a/c ect..

That is a nice kit you have. But after looking at your page I simply don't think I could give you what it is worth. I am thinking about building the same kit though so I'll be in touch with you when I start mine.

Well over the course of building the entire car I would like to keep it around 10k. But at the moment I only have $1,500 that is in the bank ready to spend right away.

If it is a 1985 model it is a 5 speed. If it was a 4 speed than it must be a 1984 model. Ask him to email you the vin# to check.

    http://www.fiero.net/vin.html

The fact that it has a new clutch (verify paperwork if you decide to buy) is a good thing because a clutch job on a fiero can be $700 - $1100. Make sure you understand the differences in fieros before you buy one. Here is the basics you should know:

    2 engines: I4(inline 4 cyl) 92hp and V6 140hp models
All automatic transmissions are the same for all years
There are actually 5 different manual transmissions

Year, engines - manual trans options
    1984 - only I4 models, 4 speed performance(more common) or 4 speed economy
    1985-1988 I4 came with 5 speed isuzu
    1985-1986 V6 came with 4 speed muncie*
1987-1988 V6 cyl came with 5 speed getrag

*Some of the last 1986 V6's came with the 5 speed getrag

In 1988 the brakes and suspension were upgraded but there aren't as many parts available for this year so it is more expensive to maintain.

Power steering was not an option for Fieros despite what the ad says.

Not all fieros are the same - do some research to make sure you get the one you want before you spend your cash.

yes, you dont have the money right now to buy a kit, so take the time and look for a v-6! with all power "windows, locks" when i 1st started i was in the same postion as you i really wanted a diablo but did not have the money and i rushed out and bought a 84 4cyl 4spd for $600,power nothing! it had 67000 miles on it, and it ran great! but after awhile i really wanted a v-6 and i thought i should have waited and spent a little more money on a v-6. insted of rushing out and buying the 1st fiero i seen. now i have an 85 v-6 4spd with an 328 kit that im working on so i went from daiblo to 328. but look for a v-6 and dont rush it won't happen overnight.and you will feel better in the long run.
