    advise on temporary mold material

I'm going to make some "temp" molds from a plug (will need multiple sections), and I was wondering if anyone had any experience in using and reinforcing "ultracal 30" , what sort of release etc etc. When I was back in the UK I used something called "Denaco" or something like that, but I do not seem to be able to find its equivalent in the USA.

    thanks in advance

I have had some luck with a product called durabond 30...its a filler type product used in drywall repair ,sets hard in 30 min ,you can get other times 15/90 min ,needs to be sealed with multiple coats of primers to release properly ..its available at most builing supply .Home Depot etc ....hope this is what you are talking about ...its not really a casting material but I have made shapes with it before ...john

Thanks for the tip , ultracal is a gypsum based tooling material, so i'm assuming its similar stuff , I've used open weave cloth for reinforcement before now, but i've heard stories about a plastic mesh , but never found anybody thats used it

Re: advise on temporary mold material

Ultracal 30 can have a number of reinforcement types... Fiberglass cloth and mat, metal and plastic screening, damp burlap, damp hemp fiber, etc. For cost and strength... I usually go for fiberglass material. It helps to buy it in bulk instead of the packets at the store... big rip off! Let me know if you need to find places to get the stuff.

As for release agents. All I do is wax the part. Most paints or some type of finish is enough to release ultracal just fine. It's always good to do too much than risking it being not enough though.

Here are a couple suppliers in Michigan... Not sure if any are close to you or not, but hopefully one will be a good choice.

http://www.michiganfiberglass.com (you'll have to call for prices for both)
    http://www.epfiber.com

Also, there are ones in Minnasota and Ohio... although those are not as close, I'm listing those too.

Also check your yellow pages or business area for fiberglass supplies, and boating repair places. Good Luck
