    Convertible Top Mechanism

As I had promised, I spent a few hours on Sunday this past weekend creating the folding top mechanism for everyone to see.

I have taken the designs from Automoda and the other pics we have seen on the board here, and created the folding rear pillar section. It only took about 3.5 hours on Sunday to get the prototype created and working. I am now working on getting the stabilizing piece put in that goes under the bottom of the pillar so the bottom piece of the pillar folds under as required.

The top of the bow now sits right on top of the firewall when collapsed with the bottom 3-4" of the pillar folding up underneath the top bow. It all sits flat on the top of the B-Pillar frame and the firewall so far.

I took pics that I will post tonight to show how the mechanism works. It really is quite easy overall. I will also be creating detailed drawings of the top mechanism for any others that want to copy it yourselves.

I am only making the rear folding pieces though and not the front piece as I have the solid targa section that I have decided to use. I may go for a full convertible at a later time but I am doing the targa for now.

    Pics will be posted tonight.

    Cheers
    Don

    Don:

I am about to scrap my top in favour of the design you are working upon. Would you mind emailing me some snaps of the top. I am ready to build one this weekend.

    Regards,

    Dave

Don: Very nice job. I guess I can have mine fold a little higher up the B post to get it to fold down into my car. My deck lid sticks into the car 2 inches. Your work looks great.

Are you going to use a targa type top?

Are you planning to install the seat motors in the car or use a lever stop.

    Great post,

    Dave

    Re: Convertible Top Mechanism

I just wrote out a huge post explaining all that Dave but Ie blew up again. You think I would learn.

I'll send anyone that wants bigger pics than posted to their private email as these are made quite small to get them up on the board.

The seat motors will be installed. The top bow will be beefed up as it is pretty weak on the prototype.

I will be using the targa top but have ideas I can see if they work to get a folding front section as well all handled through pivots and levers.

I used 1/2 x 1/4 bar for the push rods on the prototype as well but wil use 3/4 x 1/4 for the finished product.

Great job on the top that was the way I was going to do my top before I dropped the Spider and went coupe. In my opinion it the best way to make a top for the Fiero.
