    3 inch cradle stretch Q's

Here's the question, what is the preferred method for extending the front mounting arms on the fiero cradle? Cutting off and then adding 3 inches of steel tubing to the stock arms or just cutting off the stock arms completely and fabbing up a new set of arms that are 3 inches longer? Also for the rear mounting points do I just need to weld a nut with the appropriate thread size in the new location? I'm not doing a 355 kit, I'd just like to stretch the stock wheelbase +3inches & I'm ditching the trunk so I have more room for a '95 3.4DOHC.

    Thanks

I have all of the information on FunnyWheels Build progress.* I cut and spliced my front frame horns then welded a gusset on both sides.* Yes to the second question on moving the mounting bolt rearward.* Make sure you also use a 1/4 inch piece of steel plate welded to the frame to stiffen it up.* You also need to move the top of your shocks to the rear of the shock tower with a smaller set of coil over strut springs from Held Motor Sports.* If using a V8 go with 350# - 375# springs and a big sway bar.

Another view.* You don't have to do the rear pads like I did.* Just build up the rear mount 1.5 inches so you don't have to use the Fiero rubber mount.* I made a spacer to compensate for the rubber.

In the car. If you cut out your trunk, use something to brace the chassis to keep it in allignment with the other parts of the car. There is a beefy cross member between the shock towers.

Nice work funny, good pics too. Are those Held Strut relocation bracket thingies (forget what they're called, the ones to put the 88 cradle in an 84-87 car?) 8)

    Horse:

I used Slalom Wide Track Swing Arms and coil over shocks from Ryane Motor Sports (Silver ones) then installed the anti-bump steering kit from Held Motor Sports. Much better handling these days. The regular swing arms made +4 inches longer really made the Fiero chassis want to swap ends on me when exiting a freeway etc. Spun it once and decided to change to the Held set up.

No Held cradle relocation stuff used. It might of been better to use an 88 cradle though.

for only 3" stretching the cradle ends and using coilovers definitely seems like the way to go. My TR has a stock cradle and some very heavy gauge metal added on to the cradle mounting tabs and body and the new cradle mount tabs are 7.25" back.
