    information on converting Porsche transaxle to mid-engine

    Hello all....

    I'm looking for information or links to get information on how to convert a Porsche 915 or G50 transaxle into mid-engine configuration.

    Also helpful would be drawings or dimensions of the transaxle case (especially mounting points) so that I can proceed to the next step of my build planning...

    Thanks for any links you can provide !

    Trevor

    Try Kennedy Engineering. With the G50 you need to turn it upside down (need to change the oiling system in the process), the 915 will require a ring gear flip and re shimming the carrier (about $1k to do that alone). Another option is to use an Audi transaxle to build your car. They are rated to 450 HP and are easily used for a mid engine set up. The shift linkage is also easier to connect since it it like the Fiero set up (see the shaft on the side of the trans, Porsche on the rear). Both the Porsche options will require a special shifter that runs about $650 or so. Audi and Porsche use the same gears with the exception of the 944 that uses a fatter first gear than the Audi.

    Trevor;

    Give me a call and I can show you what a G50 looks like in the inverted configuration to mate to a V8. Mounting points et al. We'll take that trip out to my buddy's garage to look over the frame that I talked to you about before.

    Also, if you go to lambolounge and do a bit of searching through the trans section, you will see how a couple ingenious individuals have used the Fiero shifter and cables that attach to a metal rotating setup that allows you to shift teh Porsche trans.

    Cheers

    Pavo....

    I am planning a scratch build, as I haven't yet seen something that appeals to me, I decided to go from scratch. It will be mid-engined, based on the Rorty chassis with modifications as per Don's chassis. Body design will actually make use of some aftermerket Porsche body panels, see www.gt-racing.com for an idea...

    Re: information on converting Porsche transaxle to mid-engine

    What years and model of Audi Transaxles should I be looking for? Certainly would like a 6 speed but 5 will do. Will a Quattro work? What years? What about the extra output shaft?

    Thanks for your help!
