    Diagnosing a broken motor mount?

I've got a car that has a rattle at low RPM; almost sounds like the exhaust is rubbing somewhere. The car itself shakes a bit when at a standstill at low idle. The person I got it from had it taken to a shop, who told him a mount was rusted. To show you how much the previous owner knew about cars, he was worried that the motor would fall out of the car and be lying on the highway.

Anyway, now it's my car to fix, and I don't know how to easily diagnose a bad motor mount. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

    To diagnos a motor mount.
With the engine running, transmission in first and then reverse.
    Brake pedal full on.
Lightly rev the motor and raise the clutch pedal (if automatic rev more) the motor will start to tilt.
If it tilts or moves more than one inch at the top it has a broken mount.
Make sure you do the same test in reverse gear too to test the opposite mounts.

A broken mount will let the top of the motor move about three inches.

Do you have a "dog bone in place on your car"

I didn't and found that to be an excellent way to break motor mounts, transaxle cases etc.

I think Jim gave you the best way to check for a broken mount, if it is then find out why and make it better.

Transaxle cases ?!? Ouch, that sounds painful! I'll definitely take a look at the dogbone, and make sure it's ok. Thanks for the tip!

Sure enough, it's a broken motor mount. I'm glad it's nothing more serious than that. I had noticed that the car shifted hard; it never dawned on me that it was the motor flopping back and forth... Thanks for all the advice guys!
