Looking for someone to cut a windshield in T.O. area ..

The summer is fast approaching and I am still without a windshield for my Countach. Anyone have a contact of anyone who can honestly cut down a Lumina Van windshield? That was what was in it before - its broken now and unfortunately the last glass shop threw it out when they couldnt cut me a new one.

    Help!

Some automotive glass shops will cut glass for you as long as you tell them upfront that you will pay for all of the broken ones. The best glass cutters will successfully cut 1 out of 3 or 4. If it just a straight cut down the sides you have a better chance. The chances of breaking on a round or radius cut goes up exponentially. Good luck.

I am 0 for 2 with windshield glass cutting shops -- that's why I was looking for a referral. They haven't charged me yet for their broken attempts. They just write it off.

But I still have no windshield.

You are very fortunate, I have been in the custom car business many years and I have not experienced that yet. Around here, you buy the windshield, they try to cut, if it breaks, that process starts over. You may have been dealing with someone fairly new. Anyone who has any experience cutting laminated curved glass knows it is a 1 in 4 or less chance of getting a good cut. No one knowing that would take the chance of eating that cost just to see if they could do it. Writing it off still comes out of someone's pocket.

Yes I saw that Jim, but I swear I read on one of the kit car forums (there is like 4 or 5 of them) that someone had a friend in T.O. that could do it. I saw the video link on kitcentral, but from the posts of a couple others, its still not that easy. I plan to try it out at the wreckers this weekend :-) the windshieldcentre.ca seems up for the task - I hope they can come thru.
I am so close to being on the road I can taste it.

I will not cut a glass for someone else, but I have cut a number of glasses and trimmed tempered glass (ground away) with some success. I don't know if is just me but new glass cuts with better success than old glass. The older the glass the more brittle it seems. Maybe just me, I don't know.

Very good video lesson. It looks like he cut 3 times without failure. I guess it's all in the technique to be able to get it right.

Just purchased a Lumina Van windshield .. $180cdn .. The store guy said he didnt like cutting glass but his dad can. His dad runs the shop in Kitchener. (away on vacation this week so I was to call him next week).

I am going to take the glass .try to make a template on it (not cutting it thou) then try a glass cutting shop. KW Glass is right around the corner from me. Fingers crossed.
