Well to start your car has to be at least a 1996 due to the fact its a E39 chassis. Also they have a kit to do this. Check eBay.

    Good Luck

In USA, the E39 series started from 1997.
    It is a 1999 BMW 540i V8 (E39) 6-Speed Manual sports package and I got these parts :-
    1) Front and rear M5 Bumpers with Side Skirts.
    2) Hamann Body Kit with Front and Rear Aprons.
    3) M5 180mph Instrument Cluster with RPM lights.
    4) Magnasound Quad Exhaust system with performance Mufflers.
    5) K&N Cat. Performance Air Filter and Cold Air Intake.
    6) M5 Sports Steering Wheel.

I plan to source some deep dish Chrome-outside and Black Inner Alloy Wheels or M6 Style Chrome Alloy Wheels - I am deciding between 19 or 20 inchers, as some of my mates say 20 inchers give a very harsh ride.

I also plan to get a Roots Supercharger and intercooler and a better ECU to escalate power from the 290 BHP it makes to over 400BHP. It shall easily hit 60 in 4 and something seconds and go onto around 180-190 mph.

So did BMW just not make a 5 series in the states in 1996? Because the E34 ran from 89-95. Maybe they sold E39 in 1996 as a 1997 model. Anyways it should be a good looking car when you are done. I had a 1997 528 a few years ago I was going to do this to. I also turned a E36 into a M3, the right way with all the seats, cluster, mirrors, factory rear bumper, etc. Most people just put a M3 front bumper on and a M3 emblem and were done.

I would love to convert my interior to an M3 as you described, Front bumper and rims as well. I love my little 323CI. It is my 4th BMW. They are great cars.

I see the old shapes (E34) for 1996.
Maybe the E39 shape came up in the latter half of 1996 or something I guess.

I had a black/tan 1995 540 then a 96 E39 528 sport new body style. It was in May 96 so in the US it was before mid year.

    OK - Cool.
As I have seen only E34s from 1996, no E39, but no worries, I guess they might be nearing their death bed aka the scrap yard soon.

what you need is a bmw specialist who also owns a 540i and has done this many times! Such as myself!! Go to link below

    http://www.kudosbmw.co.uk/e39specialist.htm

Problem is though you are in USA and I am in UK so would cost quite a bit to ship, however, we can sell you a custom made quad exhaust for the 540i very cheap to make up for it

You still might save money though if you get the bigger items ie M5 bumpers from the usa, certainly worth calling round the bmw garages, if not I do have trade account with bmw usa but not spoken to them in about 6 months!!!!
