    Molding techniques, supplies

Which product would you buy from UScomposits to make and reproduce molds, cast?

    http://www.uscomposites.com/polyesters.html

Is one gel just the best and easy to use for mold, then which for plug

    #435 standard lay-up resins
    Orange tooling gel
    Fiber glass 1-2 oz mats
    PVA or #10
    WAX #2

Example make a mold of a front bumper. Yes I know small first test sample, test sample, test sample.

    1. Bumper is exactly the way I want to produce the part.
    1.5 WAX bumper
    2. Spray the bumper with PVA or use aluminum foil? PVA
    3. Spray the bumper with orange tooling gel?
    4. Lay down fiberglass and use resin (435,404) to lay down about 10 layers?
    5. Remove mold gently
    6. Sand and buff inside the mold
    7 wax#2 inside the mold
    8. PVA inside the mold
    8.5 GEL coat?(which one)
    9. Lay down fiberglass and use resin (435,404) to lay down about 5 layers
10 remove the first bumper produced (plug)
    11. Repeat step 7-10 for another bumper

Basic steps or are there many more please add and recommend correct products to use in each step.

Also how many sq/ft does 1 gallon of resin really go. They state a lot of sq/ft.
One bumper lp640 one gallon of resin? or more and how much mat?

tdoyle, I am by no means know very much about molding, but I think your sanding the inside of the mold will be a mistake. If I understand correctly, the part you are molding needs to be "perfect" before doing the mold on it. If it is perfect, that perfection transfers to the mold preventing any work other than polishing.

I am sure.....very sure...there are others here that can shed better light, but I think I am right in this.

steps are ok, make sure you actually get tooling gel coat if you plan to mop your tool prior to use , standard gel coat tends to be a bit soft for that type of thing.

best bet is to find a good pattern making supply shop in your area and spend some quality time "chatting" before you buy.

Also plan ahead, very few bumpers are a straight 1 piece mold, so work out your tool splits ahead of time

Ill post a couple of pics to give you an idea once my patron status gets verified by Ari.

Here's a thread on PFF that you might find interesting. They do a bumper on the bottom of this page, but you should check out the whole thread.

just in case anyone was wondering!, i use black gelcoat for my molds and white for parts, helps me spot any missing areas when applying the gelcoat. simple but effective
