Audi's tranny is the 924 tranny, couple of small change external changes but otherwise the same tranny. They are very cheap to buy but it is rather hard to change the gearing if that is a concern. Also, the 924 was replaced with a stonger 915 tranny to handle horsepower. Like any tranny, if you are good to it you will not break it but ......
Those who deal with the tranny regularly don't think that it will hold the power but so far I haven't heard of anyone with one on the road. Personally I hope it works but I am glad I am not the one to have to test it.

I saw this on Brian Wolfe's page the other day. Don't know how possible it is, but it is an alternative.

thank you for the replies, I decided to go with porsche 930 with limited slip. Told will handle 700 horse power with no problem.. few extra bucks, but don't want to work on all the time. And half to drive fast ALL THE TIME!!!! ;D

If you go with the porsch 914 tranny at 550+ horse power you will blow that tranny to pieces. The tranny that you want is from a porsche 916. Ya ya ya, the car body is the same but the trans and engine is different. In the 1970 the porsche 914 came out. There was 2 different 914 models. From 1970 to 1972 porsche made the high powered 914-6 or 916 with a porsche 911 engine and with a special tranny that could handle 700 horse power. The 2nd was made from 1970 to 1978 and that one is the 914-4 this one was built using a vw engine and the tranny built to handle a max of 350 horse power. There is a big difference there. But the 914-6 or 916 is the best tranny for torq and power handling. As far as price that is a different story. Since a lot of people are trying to restore them since they were only made in 2 years parts are a b*tch to get and if you do it is an arm and a leg for it.Good Luck

Yep...I was going to mention the Renault tranny!
Doesn't Lotus use it in their sports cars?
