    transaxle needed?

    Hello.

About plans building a mid engined racer. I have a mercedes donor car with longitudional V8 and normal transmission and diff. Can I use these components for a engine located at the rear?

-I know the proper solution is a transaxle but a good one costs 3K. Any adresses or recommended transaxles, are welcome (aiming @ >400hp and 6or7gears for high speeds ~200mph if possible icw race clutch).

-Why not using the engine, clutch, transmission and then hang the diff right on to it with a VERY short drive shaft.
It will only be 50cm or so longer then?!?! and WAY cheaper

Best way to go if you are building your own chassis and design.

There is nothing wrong with that plan. The only issue is length of the drivetrain assembly. If you put all of that between the cockpit and the centerline of the rear wheels you will need a lot of room. Way more than in most sports cars.
