  • The Iguana - MX5 Wisdscreen A/C and heating going in

Well where to start, I have been reading a few threads on the forum and though some people might enjoy reading about my Iguana Build. So what is an Iguana ? In short it started life a simple idea, remake a classic kits car the Meyers Manx but update and enhance it. One of the main aims was to build something different and put my own slant on a classic.

So a few years back, well about 5 now a few mates at I that worked at Custom Vee Dub (www.customveedub.com.au) got togeather over a few beers and started to pen out some specs. Namely it needed to seat 4 people and it needed to sit on a VW beetle floor pan. So off we set, got a few hours worth of motivation from shows just a Rides, and American Hotrod. As we soon learnt though places like 5 Axis make it look easy .....

Anyway on with the pics ..

We knocked up a basic tub design and then added rear lights and some styling. Once done we glassed it out and worked it into a plug

Once it was worked it was gel coated and wet sanded to get it as smooth as possible.

So the tub and rear end was all done.

Now the plug was done a mould was made and we took the plug back to the shed to fit up to a floor pan and start work on the front end.

Not really knowing what we were doing we decided a level board was a goo place to start.

So we had a board hmmm guess we are going to need some lights ... yep these will do ..

Guess we better measure some stuff and make is sort of square .

Ok so now we are going to need some shape.

Thanks for the comments, it has been an epic.

So once we had a board set and some lights in place we started laying clay. You will see the art class blocks on the ground, we used about 200kg of clay on the bonnet alone.

Once the clay was in place we started shaping, not really knowing what we were after it sort of went the way it needed to to look right.

Once we had the clay looing as good as we could we put a hot mix on to pull the shap off and start working it into a plug.

Trimed it back and this was the look we went with.

Once we had the shell made we worked that into a plug and then flopped a mold from it and popped a bonnet so we could move on with the rest of the build.

With the body done it was time to look at the barwork and dash etc. The 1st Iguana got a steel dash with VDO Guages.

Sure doesn't look like a piece of plywood anymore. I like the look!

Interesting project. I am working on a Beetle platform project too.
Here is a picture of Bruce Meyers (left) from about a week ago in Fallbrook, CA. He is 85 and still going strong!

Cool buggy! You shouldn't have any problems selling those.

So as the build of Iguana One kept going a colour was selected and the guy who was buying it wanted Camo, so Camo it was.

It got some storage box's in the rear as he didn't want a seat.

Plenty of bits to make such as side intrusion bars.

                            Got to have some spotlights.

                              Still wanted more light ..

Oh and of course you need a snorkel as well

And lastly a Fuel tank to make it go ..
