10 layers of base and 10 layers of clear???

    WHY??

How much did you charge this customer for this custom paint job???  I bet the work Bill was a LOT more than what this car is actually worth!!!

Wow Robert that's enough material to shoot three cars.. I'm no stranger to paint and its not a showcar so why go over board?
24 coats is ridiculous, Candy flames or not its a bit much. Either way it looks good

              Very nice job!

It looks like you're a real craftsman. If I lived closer I would have you paint my PT Cruiser.

                    Re: paint

I've been painting for over twenty years including custom. A) HOK is good but not the greatest, Valspar's purchase of HOK has ruined them. They are known now for buying the cheapest leftover and seconds for resins and solvents. B) 10 coats of base and 10 coats of clear will fail before 3 years is up. Too much base causes adhesion problems unless you catalyze it and more than 5 mils of clear will likely crack or at a minimum the edges of the hood and doors will chip very, very easily because of the amount of material.

Now be proud, it is an awesome paint job. I just don't want readers to believe more is better. Some times you have to put on excessive base and clear. Base to get coverage and clear to get depth or cover tape outs. And you may very well have wet sanded enough clear off for buffing to never give an ounce of trouble.

                      Re: paint

well said bartman, i have to add if he really put all this coats, i would say it should start cracking within 1 to 2 yars max , that happen to me a few years back when a did a montecarlo for a show, i too have been painting for a long time. unless he is going to keep the car indoors, than thats a different story..

                        Re: paint

its like 30 layers of fiberglass.... all your doing it makings things heavier. (in your case, more brittle, as well)

Anyone know why the paint (PPG base/clear) on my 355 rear clip developed goose bumps ( hundreds ) when I stored it outside under a tarp?

Nice paint job, too much material. What the heck is a "20" blings"??? Is this some new vocabulary on this forum I am unaware of?

Most likely, the goose bumps are from pleurisy in the fiberglass under the paint. According to Bondo Bob, it has to be sealed with a special gelcoat primer, block sanded and then the paint process applied. I can't see it from Tampa but I would think that would be where I would start to look for the trouble. It seems that impurities will get into the pin holes then cause the paint to lift. But hey, what do I know, I am a software guy.

Sounds like a lot of work to fix it either way. Best of luck with it,
