If anyone knows what ball joint I need I sure would like to know. Or if you can put me in touch with any of the previous Held suppliers that might help too. My slalom suspension came with 13" rotors with the name Ryane stamped on them. Ryane was the name of the company after it was Formula One and before it became Held, then HT Motorsports.

Re: I need a lower ball joint for a Held slalom front end
Back on the road again, but now I'm a little nervous. I've pushed this car through some corners pretty hard and though I've only taken it up to 93mph, I'm pretty sure it would have been a disaster in either of those situations.

The nut and shaft snapped right off of the top of the ball joint. The shaft still had the nut on it but no cotter pin. The only thing that I can come up with is that without the cotter pin, maybe it loosened up enough that it got slammed around in the spindle before it broke. It was a fresh break. No partial rust at the break.

WHAT? The ball joint tapered stud broke?
I've never heard of this. Was the tapered section still in the knuckle and was it tight?
Did you need a balljoint fork to get it apart?
Even if the nut worked loose after it was properly installed you should be able to drive the car virtually forever because of the tapered nature of the stud and the way it presses into the knuckle.

I am going to replace the other lower ball joint. It is a dodge ball joint napa #10162. The uppers I don't think are under the stress load of the lowers so I'm going to leave them unless someone convinces me otherwise.

If the ball joint shaft was loose in the spindle hole you will need to check that the hole was not worn oblong. The ball joint shaft has to fit with full contact in the hole or it may break again.

Re: I need a lower ball joint for a Held slalom front end
Are you using the Fiero front knuckles/spindles or are you using the Held front spindles? I sort of rememeber a while back there was a problem with the Held front spindles not having the proper depth on the taper on their custom spindles, the problem has since been corrected. I was thinking perhaps the spindle is not completely seated all the way on to the ball joint taper. Just a thought here.....
