  • Has anyone figured out how to make McLaren mp4-12c style doors work?

They're either called dihedral, or butterfly doors. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how the mechanism works.

I stand corrected, they are both dihedral opening doors but the koneigsegg are called dihedral synchro-helix because they open out and up at the same time ;D

I would imagine that you could take a diablo/murci hinge and reposition it so that it opens outward and upward unstead of just up

I used the name straight from the horse's mouth: http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/...ral_doors.aspx

              Koenigsegg are "dihedral synchro-helix":
              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koenigsegg_CCX
              http://2dayblog.com/2009/11/20/koeni...n-door-system/

That's just semantics though. Thank you for posting the link to the "Butterfly" mechanism. It doesn't quite look like the McLaren mechanism, but it's the closest found so far.

I'm also still trying to figure out if a mechanism like this means the door can be opened in less space than a traditional door. (think mall parking stall)

                    thats not a hinge
                    thats one huge swing arm

interesting setup of chassis thou, unlike convensional carbon monocoupe, this looks like it has aluminum frame claded with riveted carbon panels

Here's a couple more shots. Maybe that would help describe the hinge better. I'm still having a hard time picturing how it works.

Could it really be that easy? I'm trying to picture how such a hinge would be mounted to handle a car door's weight.

http://youtu.be/b0ifJGpUrOQ Thanks for reminding me about the K1 Attack. I never realized that the car has such a nice suspension. (I knew about the pushrod front, but never saw the rear, until now.)

Could you post pictures of the hamann cars? Maybe that'll give me a better idea on how to mount such a hinge.

They sell door kits like these , they cost more than the "vertical door " lambo style kits but they are out there
