Is there any way to remove the auto gearshift on a v6 disable the release button and just put a chrome knob on the shift stick.

That is an easy one. There is a white plastic rod that sticks up in the center of the handle that is pushed to have the shifter release out of park. If you remove it and lock the gate open, the car could accidentally go into reverse or lower gears while driving if you happen to hit a bump of knock you coffee into it.

I would look at some of the billet knobs for a PT Cruiser and make one of them work. Push button style shift knob works as easy or easier that the factory trigger-style leather knob. Beautifully polished with a super high luster, this shifter adds tremendous character to the interior as well. They look trick and the car will function as if it should, no danger of blowing up your transaxle either.

If you want to stay GM (might be easier to adapt), the second gen Camaros (70-81) used a similar top mounted mechanism for the shifter.
