  • strange smell when timing car

I was setting my timing just now but had to stop due to a strange, unfamiliar smell and smoke coming from my engine.
I was in diagnostic mode, and had the timing light hooked up to #1. Everything was going fine, my timing was WAY off. I got the timing set to ~10 degrees, and as I went to change my timing light to the 4th cylidner I noticed smoke coming from my engine, and the back 3 cyls. seemed to be glowing red, or at least something in their area was. I shut off the engine immediately, after which a strange oily plasticy smell came out of the engine.

    Any idea what happened?

Sounds like something might of fell onto your rear manifold, probably something plastic or maybe because your manifold got red hot created lots of heat causing any plastic or rubber parts near buy to smolder.
Was the engine running for a while?

No more then 5 minutes. When I investigated with a flashlight I couldn't find any noticble damage, and the engine didn't choke at all when I saw/smelt the smoke, it kept running smoothly

Has your car been sitting for a while? One year when I stored my motorcycle for the winter some field mice made a nest on my bike by going thru the exhaust. A real mess!!! Now when Istore cars or bikes I plug the exhaust.

        Just a thought

The red exaust would indicate that you're running very lean. The smell would be any oil or paint on the manifolds being cooked off. If you haven't made any drastic changes to the motor, double check the timing. Otherwise it would seem you need a new chip.
