  • High Idle - 2700rpm (V6 86' Fiero)

    If any of you have read of build diary, you will remember something about me being sold a car which was supposed to be functioning perfectly mechanically but had many problems..

    My engine has been idling quite high (In neutral, no rear breaks so I'm afraid to put it into 1st gear). I've checked for vaccum leaks, and that the hoses going from the EGR valve under the plenum to somewhere else had a hole in it. I cut the piece with the hole off, and then re-connected the two other pieces with a piece of rubber tubing which they fit in nice and tight.

    My idle is still at 2500rpm though. My engine does turn over a lot quicker now that I fixed that hole. I've checked all the other tubes (as well as I can) and can't find anything.

    Any suggestions?

    Whenever someone says high idle its always been the
    EGR tube. But you say you got that ..
    Not a mechanic but what about the timing? Or is
    timing just for knock..
    I assume you have let it run for a bit and you have
    pulled the battery off for a bit for the computer to reset..

      I've reset the computer many times... I'm not a mechanic either, someone else suggested the timing though - How do you check it?

        Turns out the EGR valve was stuck... got the RPM down to 2500 now. I'm thinking this might have to do with the problem:





        Is something supposed to be hooked up here? What? And where does it come from?

          Thats not the egr valve .. egr valve is the silver/bronzish
          circle looking thing. A simple inexpensive replacement.

          THe piece you have circled is simply air intake. Not having
          hooked up is no big deal..

          You run a tube from the end to the firewall where there
          is a 1/4" tube running from right to left that leads back
          to the air filter canister.

          Simple piece of rubber tubing will do.

                Have you tried shorting out the ADL thing on the center
                console and looking for computer codes?

                Do a search on the web for the specifics on how to do
                it ..

                Nothing needed to buy just a paperclip :-)
